The route from Lake Louise climbs past the Columbia Icefield, Peyto Lake and the Athabasca Glacier before reaching Jasper townsite, gateway to Maligne Lake, Spirit Island and some of the darkest night skies in the world. It's a full day's journey each way, so most travellers give it its own time rather than rushing.
